3D – The Unexpected

The next morning, Skyla grabbed her breakfast and found Jonathan outside fertilizing the new set of lilies. He whistled as he worked and grinned at her arrival. She was glad to see he was in a better mood.

“My gorgeous wife…”

She peered down at the new plants and compared them to the old. “Those have grown so fast!”

“Right? You guys grow as fast as you can,” he said to the flowers. “We need you.”

Them needing the flowers was an uncomfortable reminder of why she was looking for him in the first place.

“What’s the matter?” he asked.

She smiled nervously and could barely make eye contact with him. “Jonathan…” It was silly to feel so nervous about talking to her own husband, but she couldn’t help it. The situation was so unexpected. “I, ummm…. We…we’re expecting.”

He had been so into her face, he hadn’t noticed the rest of her. She had been suspicious for a while but didn’t want to say anything until she was sure. After all, they were about a fourth of the way into their mature years. That was still young enough to have a baby and not be concerned about being too old, but it’s not like either of them ever considered having a third child. She wanted to be certain and not alarm or get anyone’s hopes up. That morning, when she got out of the shower, the confirmation was very apparent–so apparent it was scary.

Twins ran rampant in the Pruett family, and she wasn’t that big with the other two. One baby would have been a big enough surprise, but two? That was cause for alarm. However, she came to terms with it before she came out to tell him. She decided while it was an unexpected surprise, it was a pleasant one nonetheless.

“Expecting?”

His eyes were as wide as they were the first two times she told him that. She kind of liked his surprised face.

Finally, his surprised eyes shifted down to the baby bump and he saw that it was real. “Oh sweet Watcher! You’re…oh sweet Watcher! We’re pregnant?!”

She couldn’t tell if he was simply shocked or unhappy with the news. Though it would be disappointing, she would understand if he was unhappy. The news would change many things.

“H-h-how many are in there?”

She laughed. He was definitely shocked. He may have had his moments where he needed help processing his thoughts, but he never asked dumb questions.

“I don’t know, Jonathan. I was hoping you would come with me to the hospital to find out.”

He seemed to snap out of his daze a little. “Uh, yeah! Of course. Hold that thought.”

He dashed away.

“Where are you going?”

“It’s Maya’s first day of work! I can’t miss her.”
