8.99 Callie’s Day Out

Callie learned a lot about her parents during Viviana’s last pregnancy. Although she was surprised at how “regular” they were–and slightly disappointed–she couldn’t help but envy their former life. She decided that she wanted to experience life on her own and see what the outside world of adulthood was like. Callie decided to go to the gym to workout one day after everyone left for work and school. Well…she attempted to go on her own, but Julian wouldn’t let her. He tagged along, but he made sure not to hover over her while she was there. When they arrived, Julian hit the weights while Callie went to the cardio room to look around. No sooner than she arrived, someone took notice of her. She noticed an older man with a jolly gait coming toward her.

“Hello,” the man said.

“Hi.”

“Can I see some ID?”

“Excuse me?”

“ID…I need to see some ID. You don’t look old enough to be hanging out here…”

“Since when is the gym an age appropriate establishment? Who are you?”

The man laughed and said, “Calm down, calm down. I’m just messing with you. I should have known you’d be too smart for that one.”

“Oh,” Callie said in embarrassment.

“Don’t be embarrassed. Sometimes I should just stick to ‘Hi, I’m Darren. What’s your name?'”

“I’m Callie,” she said hesitantly.

She thought Darren was weird. She knew she was being hit on, but this guy had to be around her mother’s age, and that freaked her out.

“Callie? What a unique name! Let me guess…it’s short for…Carolyn. No…Callista!”

She looked at him strangely and said, “No.”

“Calliope?”

“No!”

“I got it. Calvina! You’re named after your father Calvin.”

“I’m named after no one. I’m just Callie.”

“Ok, Just Callie. Are you new to the area? I’ve never seen you around here before.”

“No, I’m not new. I was born and raised here.”

“Oh? Just first time here then, huh?”

“I usually work out at home.”

“Ohhh, I see. Self conscious? Many women are.”

“Ummm…nooo. We have a gym at home, so…yeah.”

“Oh. Sorry. I’m gonna try and keep my foot out of my mouth for the rest of this conversation!”

Another man decided to join in on the fresh meat fun.

“Hey, pretty mama. You look like someone who could help me get in shape!”

Darren took one look at Callie’s disgusted face and realized why she worked out at home.

“Excuse me?!”

Darren sensed a defcon 3 level dispute rising and decided to step in before it got out of hand.

“Ummm, I think what this gentleman is saying is that he thought you were one of the personal trainers…right?”

“Ugh! Get him away from me! Is there any hand sanitizer around here??”

“Oh, it’s like that, huh,” the man said. “That’s ok. You don’t know what you’re missing mami! Bye, Felicia!”

“My name is–”

“Let it go,” Darren interrupted. “He doesn’t need to know your name. Are you ok?”

“I feel like I need a shower now!”

“There are showers upstairs…but, you probably want to go home…”

“Excuse me,” another man said. “I don’t mean to interrupt you, but I just have a quick question.

“I’m new to the area. Does this gym offer yoga classes?”

“Not that I know of,” Darren said.

“Ok, thanks. Sorry again,” the man said and walked away.

Callie watched the man walk over to the treadmills and smiled.

“On second thought…a shower is too premature. I haven’t worked out yet!”
