Kolby sat in front of his large, flat-screen TV, whooping up on some digital boss–or trying to. He still loved the droid critters though he hadn’t played since he was a child. As a teen, he focused on school and piano, so video games took a back seat. Adulthood, however, brought much more idle time, and he was glad to see what the franchise had done with the game since then. It pleased him even more to find out they made games for console now.
In the kitchen, his lady was cooking something that smelled amazing; it made his mouth water and stomach grumble. “What are you making?”
“Eggs and toast.”
“Really? What in the world did you put in it?”
“You gonna make me some?”
“I’m not sure you’ll want it.”
He sat there, still trying to beat the opponent when Fernanda joined him with a single plate of food. Keeping his focus on the game but assessing the situation, he said, “You’re gonna eat that in front of me?”
She crossed in front of him. “Mmm hmm.”
“You’re seriously not going to make me any?”
She sat and ate dramatically, chewing slowly, letting out exaggerated moans, and saying things like “so delicious!”
Kolby scowled at her and became hyper-aware of his own empty stomach. “You’re so evil. Just wait ’til I tell my mom how you treat me.”
Her head went backward as she laughed and continued to eat her late-night breakfast.
“Hey! What’d you do that for? I was kidding.”
“Enough games. Let’s talk.”
Hopefully the digital imps didn’t get any cheap shots in before he hit the pause button. “What would you like to talk about?”
She sighed and put her plate on the coffee table. “I know you said not to freak out, but I’m freaking out.”
Her chin fell to her chest.
“About meeting my parents?”
She looked up and nodded.
He scooted closer and draped his arm around her. “Why? They’re cool. I mean, my mom might be a bit extra, but they’re cool.”
“I know, I know. I can’t help but be a little bit intimidated. I mean, your dad is an astronaut! And, you’re the Pruetts!”
“We’re not the Pruetts. Just some Pruetts. Besides, we’re not like that. They’re going to love you.”
She grinned, and her eyes looked a little bit comforted. “Have you told them about–”
He shook his head. “I will soon. Maybe not tomorrow night, but definitely soon.”
“Are you scared?”
