Joneses – 3.2 The 50 Mile High Club

“Don’t go in there… Don’t go in there! You’ll be sorry if you go in there…”

Yep. Asia talks to the screen when she watches movies. Sometimes Jared thought that watching her watch the movie was more entertaining than the movie itself. He loved his quirky wife. She was definitely one of a kind. After the character on the screen did go in “there,” and Asia subsequently chastised her for doing so, Jared seized the opportunity to tell her his news.

“I did it,” he said.

“What’s this?”

“I passed the test!”

“Good heavens!!! Jared!!”

“I am a certified, bonafide astronaut!”

“Oh Jared, I’m so proud! And happy. But mostly proud!”

“Thank you, my love.”

“That means we can get your rocket now!”

“Yes. I can go on space missions on my own accord now.”

“That’s wonderful, honey! I love you.”

“I love you too, Asia.”

She went back to her movie for a brief second, but then she had an idea. “You know… When you get your rocket, you have to take me with you sometime.”

“Oh no. It’s too dangerous. You aren’t trained! I’d be so nervous.”

“Awww, that’s sweet! But, we’re joining the 50 mile high club or else.”

He raised his eyebrow and squinted his eyes. “Or else what?”

“Or else…

“What’s it gonna be, Jared? Are you taking me to space?”

“Never!”

She tickled him even more mercilessly, and he shrieked. He’ll never admit to it if you confronted him about it.

“OK! OK! I’ll take you to space!”

“I thought you’d see things my way,” she said.

“You’re a crazy woman…and I love you.”

“Mmm hmmm.” She went back to her movie.

This was the life Jared always wanted. Growing up in a big, busy, loving family made him want exactly that: a big, happy family. For a little while, he wasn’t sure if the family would get as large as he wanted, but it was always happy. He had to make some sacrifices and let a few people down to get there, but sitting there beside his loving wife in his own house talking about the promotion he had been waiting for…man…it was totally worth it.
