Joneses – 9.4 Blast from the Past

*knock* *knock* *knock*

“It’s open!”

Lester was surprised to see an unknown man dressed in odd attire at the door. They usually did not entertain strangers. At first he was going to keep playing his game on the computer but decided this person may need his full attention. “Yeah? What’s up?”

“Hello. I am Raj Rosaya. I was looking for India Cornelius.”

Lester enjoyed the way he rolled his R’s and was tempted to try it. “Oh. She’s at work. What do you want with her?”

“I am a friend of a friend, and I hear she may be looking for a change in employment. I wanted to ask her if she wanted to come cook for me. I am opening a restaurant.”

“Oh! Well, that’s cool. I dunno. She recently came into a lot of money. I’m not sure she’s gonna wanna work for anybody soon, but I’ll tell her you came by and have her call you.”

Just then someone else knocked on the door, but Lester couldn’t see around Raj’s turban. “What is this? National visitor’s day?” He got up to see who was at the door and answer it, but when he did, he could not believe his eyes. He was frozen.

But, he quickly recovered. “Well, well, well! Look what the cat dragged in!” He motioned for her to let herself in. “It’s my kitten.”

“Don’t call me that,” she said in the same dry voice he used to love so much.

He thought her young adult birthday treated her well; she looked so radiant.

“Is this your lady friend?” Raj asked.

“Well, uhhh, she could have been, buuuut…well, I guess she just needed some time.”

She rolled her eyes. “I just came to see if you, like, wanted to hangout or something.”

“She came to her senses,” Lester said. “Maybe I should teach her a lesson. Give her a taste of her own medicine?”

Raj chuckled. “You have spirit! That’s good, young lad. But, it is not every day we have beautiful ladies at our doors inviting us out. Are you sure that is the best solution?”

“Yeah, you’re right.” He turned to Shea. “Just forget I said that, ok?”

She had been taking notice of his new look while she was pretending to be annoyed by this show he was putting on. “You got a hair cut.”

“Yeah. My friend, who is a girl, created this look for me, but my mom suggested the contacts.”

“Hmmm. It’s a nice look.”

“Oh… Uhhhh…thanks.” He felt very tingly inside.

Raj could feel that the two young people could use some space and excused himself. “Ok…well, thanks for delivering my message. I’ll leave you two to it. I will see myself out.”

Lester waited until he was gone before he turned his attention back to Shea. “You were saying?”

She looked uncomfortable. “You wanna…go somewhere and do something?”

“Oh yeah,” he said. “I know just the place.”
