Read-a-thon: Chapters 12 & 13

I struggled with chapter 12 a lot. This was the first time I ever wrote something that was a little bit dark; it made me nervous.

You will do well to remember this bit:

“Where she came from, girls took orders from their parents until they were married. Although Juliana was 18 and was considered to be an adult, she would still be considered to be a child in her mother’s eyes until a man came and took her away.”

This will be the basis for many decisions Juliana will make (and relapses she will have) in seasons 2 and 3. Variations of this will be seen over and over again to drive this point home.

Chapter 13 was appropriately named No Words because it actually contained zero words, but it also was a testament to Juliana’s pain as she had nothing to say to Harriett. I actually tried to write this chapter quite a few times, but it felt redundant. I felt the pictures were quite strong and spoke for themselves, and I had no words that could make them stronger.

Fun Fact: Harold isn’t as evil as you think. There’s more to him than meets the eye, and you’ll see some of that in season 2. I actually like Harold a great deal.
