3D: Squabbles

Every time she waltzed into a room, everything paused until he felt the courage to breathe again. Time, the sun, even gravity suspended in her presence. She was the center of his galaxy, and everything in existence bowed to her. Sky. That was her name and exactly where she belonged: up in the heavenlies with the angels and all things majestic. How could it be that he found himself more in love with her at that moment than ever in life? And, she was so dang hot! She could wear a paper bag, and he’d still find himself wanting her. Great Watcher almighty! Surely she was a goddess for she had such a power over him. Whenever he entered her presence, all he wanted to do was grab her and–

“Hey, so I was thinking we should probably start planning Oliver’s party. We’ve been so busy with J. Pruett’s and the park stuff, it just kind of snuck up on us!”

Her mouth was moving, but he didn’t hear a word she said. “…what?”

“Oliver’s birthday? It’s around the corner you know. I was thinking we could have it at the park and maybe have a clown…not the tragic kind though. Those guys are way too sad. Oh! Do you think he would like fireworks? Oh no, that would be too loud and scare him probably. What about a comedian? Maybe he’s too young for that. What do you think?”

He snorted. “I think it’s a waste of money.”

She gasped. “Jonathan! This is your son! Our baby. Our last baby. You don’t want to celebrate his next stage of life?”

“Of course I do! But, Sky…listen…why don’t we do something big when he’s gonna be old enough to remember such a fancy shindig? All he’s gonna do is throw cake everywhere and wear everyone down until we all show him flash cards.”

She looked disappointed yet turned away like she considered what he said.

“Ok…if you want to do a big party, do a big party. But, if it’s my opinion you want, I say we should save our money for something more important…like our daughters’ weddings!”

Her eyes widened. “They’re getting married?”

“Well, not tomorrow, but yeah…sometime soon. I can feel it!”

She looked relieved. “You might be right about that. Gosh, would you ever imagine that I would be the one wanting to spend money and you would be the one wanting to save it?”

“Ha! Yeah, that is a good one. No one would ever believe it!”

“Seriously.” She took a deep breath. “Ok, I’ll rethink the whole party thing.”

She lingered in his eyes for a second, sending shivers up and down his spine. “Are we really here? Getting ready to send our daughters away?”

He sighed. “It certainly looks like it.”

She fell into his arms. “I don’t know if I’m ready for that.”

“Yeah…well…I don’t think we have much time to prepare.”

“What will we do?”

“I’m sure Oliver will give us plenty, heh.”

“I hope he’ll be over those flash cards after his birthday.”

They laughed together with a sense of hope. The future was unknown and seemed to be running toward them with abandon, aiming to knock them over.

“We could always start over again,” he said coyly.

She stepped away from him. “Are you out of your mind?”

“It was worth a shot, he he he.”

“Where are you going?”

“I’ll be upstairs in case you change your mind.”

“Ha! You are a crazy crazy man, Jonathan Pruett.”
